IFB churches often have lengthy and complex rules that are used to keep unmarrieds from having sex. These rules follow young adults to the IFB colleges they attend. We were expected to maintain a six-inch distance from each other at all times. One would think that IFB pastors and college leaders would approve of masturbation as a way of dealing with pent-up sexual frustration.

Unfortunately, masturbation is also a sin. As an IFB teenager, I heard pastors who warned church teens about the dangers of masturbation, including, — oh yes they did! First, masturbation can be a form of homosexuality because it is a sexual act that does not involve a woman.

If a man were to masturbate while engaged in other forms of sexual intimacy with his wife then he would not be doing so in a homosexual way. If one was [sic] to scan the horizon of current evangelical thought he or she would find a number of conclusions on the matter of masturbation. There are some who would claim that it is inherently neutral or even innately good and thus would teach that it is an appropriate way to express gratitude for sexual desire.

The spectrum is wide and the positions are quite varied. Chandler is also part of the The Gospel Coalition — a Fundamentalist group with Calvinistic leanings. DeRouchie, writing for the Desiring God website, says :. Many medical professionals treat masturbation as a natural part of human development, and some church leaders have attempted to supply practical and theological reasons to masturbate. From a biblical perspective, however, I do not believe this approach pleases God, and I have seen the devastation that such a practice brings to both singles and marrieds alike.

When people reach orgasm outside the covenant-confirming act of lovemaking in marriage, the act becomes solely self-seeking, divorced from its purpose of creating intimacy. Sexual expression through orgasm should be an overflow of a desire for a spouse, not merely for a feeling or experience.

As noted, orgasm outside the marriage bed removes the relational, intimate nature of sexual expression, which is at the core of its purpose 1 Corinthians —3, 5. It reminds couples that their spouse is not given as an object to be exploited, but rather as a covenant partner to be provided for, protected, and respected Ephesians , 28, 33; see also Genesis From this perspective, evil desire fuels all sexual expression outside the marriage bed, including masturbation, so we must treat all such acts as sinful and as deserving of hell Matthew —30; Mark —23; 1 Corinthians —10; Galatians , 19—21; Ephesians ; Colossians —6.

Jesus urged his followers to guard themselves from lustful masturbation, and Paul called Christians to control their sexual parts in holiness and honor. Jesus appears to link masturbation with lust when he declares that looking at a woman with lustful intent is sin, and then charges his disciples to take extreme measures with their eyes and hands, so that they will preserve themselves unto life Matthew — Self-control is a new-covenant fruit of the Spirit Galatians —23 , a discipline that pleases God, nurtures hope for eternal life, and frees one from fear of future punishment Romans —9, 13; 2 Timothy Lack of self-control is sin and enables greater influence by the evil one Proverbs ; 1 Corinthians Intentional orgasm outside the marriage bed through masturbation witnesses a lack of self-control and is therefore sin.

As men and women of God, therefore, may we not engage in it. Instead, may we look to our Lord for help and seek to honor him with our bodies by allowing our only outlet for sexual desire to be the covenant-nurturing intimacy of marital lovemaking Job Please do look up all the Bible verses given by De Rouchie.

The point, as we see it, is the larger meaning and purpose of human sexuality. The Bible has two important things to say about this: first, sex is central to the process by which husband and wife become one flesh Genesis ; and second, sex and marriage are intended to serve as a picture or symbol of the union between Christ and His Church Ephesians , These theological perspectives should inform and shape our approach to the practical problem of masturbation.

At the same time, we should do everything we can to help adolescents, young adults and married couples see that self-gratification is inconsistent with the purpose, goal and basic nature of sex.

Why not? Individuals who fall prey to this addiction may end up carrying it with them into adult married life, where it can become a serious obstacle to healthy marital intimacy. What can be done to break this pattern? In many cases, masturbation originates as a self-soothing behavior. For example, by talking things over with a friend, reading an engaging book, listening to music, pouring yourself into a constructive project or serving other people.

Only a relationship with the Lord can fill that empty space in a deep, lasting and satisfying way. Yet, for all their preaching against the sin of Onanism , virtually all Evangelical teens, young men, and even married men, masturbate. Being raised in an anti-masturbation church environment caused quite a bit of problem for me as a teen and unmarried adult.

While I was a virgin when my wife and I married, I found myself rounding third and heading for home not only with Polly, but also with a girl named Anita. The rest of my dating relationships were casual and of short duration. I was eighteen years old when I started dating Anita. She was twenty, a college student at a Conservative Baptist college in Phoenix, Arizona.

Anita and I, for five short months, had a torrid relationship. Of course, we also did a lot of necking too. Our intimacy stirred my sexual passions to such a degree that I would go home after dates and spend time praying to God for forgiveness, thanking him for not allowing us to give into our sexual desires. For me, not giving in included not masturbating. I was nineteen, she was seventeen. I planned on playing the field at college, but meeting Polly changed everything.

Dating students were expected to keep the rules even during Christmas and summer break. No one, and I mean no one , did so. Once back at Midwestern, Polly and I were faced with a dilemma. We wanted to continue touching and kissing each other; you know, as dating teens and young adults are wont to do. This meant we would have to secretly break the rules. The vast majority of dating students — with but a handful of exceptions — broke the rules.

Some students even slid into home and had sexual intercourse. The Midwestern dorm was a den of raging hormones. With masturbation forbidden and touching the opposite sex grounds for expulsion, what were dating students to do?

IFB young adults were very much like their counterparts in the world — the ss world. We, like our peers, wanted sexual intimacy without fear and guilt. Masturbation, then, was common among male students in the Midwestern dorm. Each dorm room had a periodic responsibility to clean the dorm bathrooms, including the showers. Yuck, I know, but have you ever been in a male dormitory shower room? IFB preachers and their Evangelical counterparts continue to preach against the sin of masturbation.

Despite all their preaching, masturbation remains widely practiced. Masturbation is a harmless, effective way to find sexual release. Wanting to obey God and their preachers , Evangelical unmarrieds do their best to refrain from sexual intercourse before marriage. What really should happen, of course, is for Evangelical churches and colleges to begin endorsing safe, responsible sexual intimacy among unmarrieds.

With the average age for young people marrying in their late 20s, it is absurd to expect them to refrain from sex for ten to fifteen years before they tie the knot. Maybe then, young adults might be less likely to flee the confines of Evangelical Christianity.

Perhaps, it is time to rewrite or update the Good Book, striking from its pages all the sexually repressive rules and regulations. And you too, Preacher Man. Is Sexual Self-stimulation Wrong? : Christian Courier

The sex drive during the teenage years is usually the strongest especially for men. Young men struggle with not only the physical need to release their semen but also with sexual thoughts that continuously flow their minds. Even many young Christian women struggle with this.

First let me assure you as a Christian young person or older person that you are not abnormal, perverted or weird for masturbating. Another way of saying this is it is a very common and normal human behavior. The Catholic Church teaches that masturbation is a sin. This is why the Church condemns masturbation even in marriage as part of sex between a man and his wife and they also condemn oral sex.

But the Catholic Church is not alone in its condemnation of masturbation — there are many Protestant Christian churches and teachers that also condemn masturbation. Now we look at the various arguments that Christian churches use to condemn masturbation and then answers those arguments. A myth that has been pushed by churches for centuries is that God killed a man named Onan for masturbating.

This is the situation we find with a man named Onan in the Bible:. God was not saying here that either masturbation or even a man pulling out to avoid impregnating his wife was sin. So there is nothing from the story of Onan that backs up the common teaching in some Christian churches that God killed Onan for masturbating. The Bible in this passage says three activities make people unclean temporarily until evening:. A man having an emission of semen by himself.

A man having an emission of semen by having sex with his wife — she also becomes unclean but getting his semen on her body. So if we called a man sinful for having an emission of semen without having sex with a woman through masturbation or nocturnal emission then we would have to say a man having sex with his wife was sinful and a woman having a period was sinful.

None of these activities were considered sinful. The primary purpose of the cleanliness laws of the Old Testament was to prevent diseases but also God used the cleanliness laws to teach his people about holiness. It did not mean everything they had to wash after was sinful — it was simply a teaching tool. Some Christians will say that masturbation is not wrong when a married couple engage in this toward one another as part of the larger act of sex.

There is no doubt that masturbation is a sexual activity. I would even argue that sexual thoughts and fantasies is sexual activity even though it is only mental as opposed to masturbation which is a physical sexual activity. Often times when people masturbate they are doing both of these activities — thinking sexual thoughts and also physically masturbating.

But the question is not whether masturbation is a sexual activity but whether God restricts all sexual activities to marriage. This is why cybersex, phone sex and any other type of sexual relations between persons even if the relations are only mental and not physical are consider sinful.

When you masturbate by yourself you are not having sexual relations. Relations require at least two parties. Even if you were thinking of a member of the opposite sex and having a fantasy this is not sexual relations.

You cannot have relations with a fantasy — you can only have sexual relations with another living being. Some Christians both Catholic and Protestant teach that one of the ways we know that masturbation is sinful is because many times people feel shameful about it. They say this is evidence that we know it is wrong even if the Scriptures do not clearly state it is wrong. But this is a faulty argument. There are some things that we are private about that are normal bodily functions.

We want to perform this bodily function in private. My first wife actually had a great phobia about bowel movements because her mother shamed her about them. She was so paranoid about leaving any smell in the bathroom that often times she would try to only go to the bathroom at school and other places and not at home.

She was especially ashamed if she was ever constipated and clogged up a toilet and her Dad had to unclog the toilet. So the argument that if we feel shame about some bodily function or want it to be private that it must automatically be sin is extremely faulty. The Bible nowhere condemns us a Christians from enjoying physical pleasure. Whether it is eating foods we enjoy or going to a ball game. It might be having sex with our wife.

Perhaps we like playing video games or we enjoy painting. The Bible does not condemn us doing any of these things. A person who is living in a lascivious or sensual way is a person who has made pleasure the central focus of their life. They live not to serve God but only to experience the physical pleasures of this world. So no you do not have to be ashamed of being aroused by members of the opposite sex or of masturbating because these things give you pleasure.

It is only when these things become the center of your life instead of just a part of your life that you do in moderation that they become sin. Paul said this about not allowing anything to take over our life and take our focus off serving God and following his plan for our lives:. Sexual fantasy and masturbation are not sexual sins — contrary to the assertions of many Christian teachers over the centuries. But masturbation and fantasy can help to keep a person from committing real sexual sins like premarital sex or adultery.

Masturbation helps to relieve the sexual stress that is normal in teens and young adults before they are married. It can also help these same young people when they are dating if they masturbate before going on dates that this can take the edge off and help to reduce their temptation to have premarital sex.

In marriage masturbation and by extension sexual fantasy can help when one spouse is medical unable to have sex and the other needs some relief. I can also help in other marital situations where sex may occur but it is less frequent than desired or the quality and enthusiasm of the spouse is lacking.

These arguments are all faulty and lack Biblical support. I have shown two strong argument to encourage the practice of masturbation instead of condemning it. I would also encourage you to read an article I wrote on a little know passage of Scripture in Leviticus 15 about the subject of the cleanup of masturbation. Search for:. Do Christian churches condemn masturbation? Arguments against Masturbation Now we look at the various arguments that Christian churches use to condemn masturbation and then answers those arguments.

Argument 1 against masturbation — God killed Onan for masturbating A myth that has been pushed by churches for centuries is that God killed a man named Onan for masturbating. The Bible in this passage says three activities make people unclean temporarily until evening: A man having an emission of semen by himself A man having an emission of semen by having sex with his wife — she also becomes unclean but getting his semen on her body.

The point is masturbation is never called a sin in the Bible. Argument 3 against masturbation — Masturbation is sin because God restricts all sexual activity to sex in marriage Some Christians will say that masturbation is not wrong when a married couple engage in this toward one another as part of the larger act of sex. Argument 4 against masturbation — We know masturbation is sinful because of the shame associated with it Some Christians both Catholic and Protestant teach that one of the ways we know that masturbation is sinful is because many times people feel shameful about it.
