We would never have contemplated showing anything of the type Mr Newbury suggests might have been shown. Last Friday, Mr Mitzevich declined to reveal details of the exhibition content when asked by the Sunday Mail and said the gallery would not put a rating system on the display, similar to movies, but would advise if there were any adult themes. Mr Abbott said the gallery had spent a considerable amount of money on an interactive centre for children and attendances by children had been increasing annually.
When asked, Mr Abbott would not elaborate on the reason Mr Henson had withdrawn if there were no plans to exhibit any of his controversial works.
David Penberthy: A creepy divide between art and exploitation. The Art Gallery of South Australia owns 14 Henson works — which include photographs of naked young men. None of the works are on display. In Mr Henson featured a series of pictures of a year-old naked girl in a Sydney exhibition that was subsequently raided by NSW police. The officers seized 20 pictures and said he would be prosecuted, but the Director of Public Prosecutions later decided against pursuing any charges.
Displays of this nature can now only be held with a ratings classification. Rather it comes from some of the painful lessons of recent decades, where we have come to understand much better the complex factors that open children to exploitation and abuse.

Photographed girl defends nude magazine cover - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Are his photographs of nude women, men, children and adolescents poised on puberty's divide art or, well, something else? Will we ever catch on to Sturges' straightforward insistence that bodies as he claims to see and show them are simply, innocently beautiful? Can any nude photograph, in an Internet age of YouTube teases, celebrity peekaboos and pornography of infinite gradations and numbing profusion, escape the brand of the culture's relentlessly sexualizing marketplace? In one shot in the Palo Alto show, two prepubescent boys pose nude on a deck, the hand of one boy resting lightly on the shoulder of the other.
In another large-format image, a nude child stands on a picnic table as an older girl, also unclothed, peers sideways at her; a third girl sits hunched and sulking in a plastic chair. Across the gallery, sunlight gilds the limbs and slim torso of a 20ish woman on a beach. She's nude and facing in the camera's direction. Everyone else in the photograph is fully clothed and gazing out the other way to sea.
It's impossible to look at shots like these and not start spinning scenarios and connections that link the subjects to each other, to the photographer and to the viewer in some fairly intricate webs. Despite what he says about his up-front body-beautiful intentions, Sturges' photographs beg to be read, interpreted and decoded.
To him, he says, it's all much simpler than that. I get a free ride because of that. A little backstory on the artist is required. In a highly publicized raid of his San Francisco studio in April , FBI agents rummaged through Sturges' files, confiscated prints and mangled negatives.
After a month investigation, a grand jury failed to deliver an indictment on child pornography charges. But Sturges didn't exactly fade into the woodwork, either. Photographers who persist in shooting nude subjects of all ages tend to stay on the radar.
Sales of his prints and books have never dried up. In he withdrew from a group exhibition in Los Angeles, "The Passion Show," that included work he deemed "explicitly erotic. In his statements throughout, Sturges has invited people to take his photographs at face value, as objects of "identity exploration" and "sacral regard" for the body. Whatever else people made of his photographs was beyond his control. Nor could he be bothered what anyone thought of his marriage to a woman, Maia Davis , whom he first photographed when she was The marriage took place 20 years later, when Davis was Sturges has photographed many of his subjects from childhood through adulthood.
Two of them -- Misty Johnson , 27, and Christina Russ , 29 -- showed up at the Palo Alto opening after driving 10 hours to surprise him. Paging through a book that depicted them nude as children, Russ said, "These pictures capture us at our moments of being strong and powerful. The goal was to chronicle us through our whole lives. In one view, Sturges can be seen as a kind of weathervane of the times. In today's era of emaciated public funding, which has effectively erased the arts from any national conversation, he's no longer controversial.
Everything did seem becalmed at the Stellar Somerset opening. People talked quietly as they shuffled from one picture to the next. The gallery was serving tiny portions of wine and Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Sturges, these days, is suburban safe.
The bodies on view, to a one, are all youthful, fit and lean. A warm bronze light prevails. But, somehow, in all this celebration of the body beautiful, there's a nagging vacancy -- in the models' abstracted expressions and a slack structure and framing of the scenes.
The elaborate picnic table shot seems artily contrived. So does the one of the two boys on the deck. Color presents fresh complications. Color literalizes, as it spells out every limb, hair and nipple in realistic, high-resolution detail. Sturges' photographs just don't do that very much. There's something coy, whether by intention or not, about the way they invite us to puzzle out their meanings and then so consistently resist that kind of looking. It's not that Sturges exploits his subjects.
Nothing in his work or history proves it. But he does expose them, without exposing much of anything about them. You don't feel drawn into the mystery and wonder of the nudes he photographs. You see them and move on to the next and the next.
Maybe Sturges just isn't an especially good photographer -- a possibility that he himself readily acknowledges. That doesn't make him a pornographer by default. But it might make him a kind of poster boy for the dilemmas of photographic imagery in the Internet age.
In the forthright yet strangely blank nature of his work, in its uncensored volume and digital technologies, Sturges presents the reflective image of a computer screen. Here, here it all is, his photographs say to us. Make what you will of them. That's your private business, not mine. Blood guacamole: In Mexico, avocados bring income, cartels.
