VIA OpenBook Dissected

by atticus ~ June 24, 2008

Some of you might have watched the recent Youtube video showing VIA’s Tim Brown taking apart the VIA OpenBook. While it’s interesting to see the innards of the UMPC, it’s also worth noting VIA’s promotional efforts on the OpenBook. Besides creating a dedicated website with OpenBook resources, VIA has created a dissecting video which I guess only the enthusiast community would be interested. And the marketing department has even gone around informing us of the video. Kudos to VIA!

Well, let’s not disappoint them and let us take a look at the video.

We’ve take apart a VIA OpenBook mini-note to reveal the internal hardware guts and made a short video for you to see the PCI Express Mini Cards and 52 pin edge connectors that enable the WiMAX, HSDPA, EV-DO, W-CDMA, WiFi, Blue Tooth and AGPS connectivity for the world’s most open and connected Mini-Note. The USB interface and the PCIe half-Mini Card and full-Mini Card form factor are fast becoming the industry standard with more companies developing cards and reference design cards that will make manufacturing custom VIA OpenBook mini-note designs even simpler and faster.
