Those were the words of Wired. In their review of the Sylvania G NetBook MESO, Wired was so unimpressed with the Ubuntu operating system that they declared the OS implementation a nightmare.
LaptopMag might have rated the mini notebook 2.5 out of 5, but Wired was less kind. They gave the Sylvania G NetBook MESO a dismal rating of 3 out of 10. In the whole article, Wired kept refering to the laptop as Sylvania G NetBook. But from the description of its specifications, I am guessing it’s the MESO they were reviewing. It doesn’t help that their photo link is broken.
Anyway, here’s what Wired has to say about the Netbook that would make a great replacement for your desk calculator.
WIRED Has a real hard drive (80 GB) instead of flash storage. Includes three USB ports and an SD card reader. Comes in colors. Bright screen for this category.
TIRED Slower than a sedated slug at just about every app despite 1.6-GHz Atom chip and 1-GB RAM (standard $399 model includes just 512-MB RAM). Cartoonish styling. Considerably heavier than advertised (and the Eee PC 900) at 2.6 pounds. Far too buggy to be taken seriously.
In the video, we were introduced to the Polish Aristo NetBook which VIA said was based on the Nanobook platform. From what I can see, it is the same as the 8.9 inch Everex CloudBook. It appears that the Nanobook reference design extends to the FIC CE2A1. Other mini-notes we see in the video are the VIA OpenBook prototype, Elonex Webbook, One Mini Notebook and HP 2133.
We had previously posted about Everex Japan’s CloudBook CE1220J and CloudBook CE1221J and we were wondering if similar models would appear in U.S soon. It looks like it’s going to happen. The new CloudBook, which is based on FIC CE2A1 (FIC is the parent company of Everex), has appeared in FCC website. There, you can download PDFs containing photos and information of CE2A1. The user manual is a worthwhile read if you want to know its specifications and features. I have extracted a few images from the PDFs.
MSI Wind is probably the next most popular NetBook after Asus Eee PC. Like the Everex CloudBook, MSI Wind has been rebranded (or clones as some people like to call them) around the world under different OEMs. Apart from HDD size, colors and availability of Bluetooth, most of these NetBooks have the same specifications as the original MSI Wind U100.

Everex Japan has announced two new UMPCs, the CloudBook CE1220J and CloudBook CE1221J. These mini laptops come with a very usable 8.9″ screen at 1024×600 resolution and yet, they are about the same size as the earlier 7-inch CloudBooks. These CloudBooks run on the Windows XP operating system and feature VIA 1.20GHz processor, 1Gb RAM, 60Gb HDD and an express card slot. If I am not wrong, they should be the FIC CE2A1 which was announced a while ago.
CloudBook CE1220J and CE1221J appear similar in specifications. The only difference is that CE1221J comes with an extra battery (If I didn’t understand wrongly from Google Translate). Here’s a glance at the specifications:
