More Reviews of 10.2 inch Elonex Webbook

by atticus ~ August 23, 2008

Since I last reported on the free Elonex Webbook, reviews on the mini laptop have surfaced on the internet. How does the Elonex Webbook fare?

At PC Advisor, it scored 3 out of 5.

The Elonex Webbook is a mini laptop being promoted exclusively by The Carphone Warehouse – for ‘free’ with a new two-year Orange broadband account, or separately for £249 with XP and £219 with Ubuntu.

The Elonex Webbook is pretty much the cheapest mini laptop around, and feels it. You get good storage capacity, a relatively clear and bright matt screen and a usable keyboard.

At Pocket-lint, it scored 8 out of 10, which is the same score it gave to Asus Eee PC 901.

So how does it fair against other netbook offerings on the market? The 10.2-inch screen will match the Asus 1000 and MSI Wind for its quality, and the keyboard was easy to use with.

The trackpad, although not suffering the same annoying fate as the HP Mini-Note, was a bit on the flaky side to use and the annoyance of not being able to easily turn the tap click feature off for us made it almost unusable (I seem to flex my finger too much).

However (and here is the interesting proposition) if you’re willing to sign a 24- month contract at £25 a month with Orange, you get it for free. If that’s not appealing enough you can buy it without contract for £249.99 making it £30 cheaper than the Advent 4211, although you will be getting less memory.

It might not be the prettiest looking netbook on the market, but if you are thinking of getting a mobile broadband card from Orange in the near future upgrading the account to get one of these for free my be something you should seriously consider doing.

i have got the webbook it is a nifty little thing but the only complain i have is the user manual ???????? it has almost no information at all. Mine is showing 24 updates but i am unable to update as it keeps saying an error occured?????

  2. Alison Says:

I agree. The so-called user manual is a joke.

I rashly snapped up a webbook a couple of days ago because I am afraid the Ubuntu Linux version will soon vanish and be replaced by ghastly old Windows. That would be a terrible shame.

Linux has many potential benefits, but it needs to be packaged and marketed in the right way. A decent user manual - that also includes instructions for installing a 3G dongle - is surely a must.

    Fingers crossed.

What a complete peice of rubbish this is hence the price. i b ought 2 for the kidsfor christmas and not one worked longer than 2weeks. Now Elonex are not preppared to refund me only exchange at my cost for postage. Also i lodged the initial complaint to them about the faults and was told a technician would call me with a reference and the address to return them to…..He did 3weeks later and gave me some cock and bull about the call demand being so high! My response was if your call demands are so high that it takes you 3 weeks to call me then you must have a very big problem with your machines.
My refund cannot be given because i,ve had them longer than 28days or so they say yet i wouldnt have if they would have not taken 3 weeks to respond.

BEWARE DO NOT BUY AN ELONEX.

That is awful. Perhaps it is still better to stick to established brands like Asus.

    John,

I suggest you talk to your local Office of Fair Trading. If you lodged the call within the 28 days then Elonex should refund in accordance with their own rules. However the 28 day rule is an arbitrary limit set by Elonex, and I suspect that the OFT will tell you that that it is not enforceable.

I bought an elonex web book last month and i love it, its light and quick and everything i could ask to play my bingo on, do my emails and go on faceboook, I LOVE IT, and the price form elonex itself was good aswell. I went against any bad press there was about it and this was a tough decision but i dont see the problem with it as its brilliant. Also rang elonex to ask how to get wifi on it, they rang me back in 5 mins and talking me through it. Excellent service in my books. and i would certaintly 100% buy fromt them again.

wait another few months and see how durable it is my charger wire decided not to last now a wire is exposed. Carphone shithouse and their monkey staff tell u to fuck off as do Elonex. (not literally)

  8. Mike Says:

I purchased the XP version last year as carphone warehouse told me that the dongle would not work on the
Ubuntu version. I have since put Ubuntu on to find that I can connect via the dongle.
Overall, I am very pleased with it, I increased the RAM to 1G and the hard drive to 250Gb. I find it very
useful to take abroad or even out for the day.
My only regret is the choice of the graphics card, I wish they had put a better one in.
