Everex Cloudbook Versus Asus EeePC - Part 1

by atticus ~ February 8, 2008

Despite the range of ultra portables in the market, Everex Cloudbook is often compared to Asus EeePC. The obvious reason for the comparison is that Cloudbook and EeePC are very similar. Classified as CLUMPC (Cheap Linux Ultra Mobile Personal Computer), they are priced in the sub US$400 range and comes with Linux as the operating system.

Check out the table below for the similarities and differences between Everex Cloudbook and Asus EeePC.

I like the nice addition of having bluetooth in the device without hacking it.

Having a smaller battery (2200mAH vs. 5200mAH) and a longer running time? I have heard that the VIA processors are very efficient, but I am skeptic of the numbers, because if it would be true indicates that the VIA platform is more then 50% more efficient then the Intel platform (and in which case, why haven’t Intel bought up the company already or licensed their technology).

  2. Michael Boman Says:

The VIA specs are at http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/processors/c7-m_ulv/ and the Intel specs are at http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/celeronm/specifications_celeronm.htm. To cut it short the VIA consumes 5W (assuming it’s a model 772 CPU in a Cloudbook) and the Intel consumes 5.5W (assuming it’s model 373 in the EEE). I don’t think .5W saving, or ~10%, is the key for the overall power savings as we are looking at over 50% savings. I would be amazed and happily surprised if the numbers are indeed correct.

The Eee card reader is practically identical and supports just as many formats as the Cloudbook’s (I’m rooting for the Cloudbook, but facts are facts)

    Michael,
I wonder if 2200mAH is a typo in Everex press release. 4 hours from 2200mAH sounds too good to be true.
Understand from your blog that you intend to perform some hacks to the Cloudbook. Looks like you are going to have some fun. :D

    RandomInsano,
Thanks for pointing out the mistake. I checked a few sites and I believe you are right. I’ll update the table.

  5. jkkmobile Says:

Cloudbook has 2200mAh battery, operating at 14.4V
Eee PC 4G has 5200mAh battery, operating at 7.4V

    = Cloudbooks battery is 31 Watts/hour and Eee PCs 38 Watts/hour

REAL LIFE battery life on both devices is about 3.5 hours

Everex 5 hour claim is false.

  6. JAmerican Says:

The EEE does not have a Memory Stick Pro card reader. It only supports SDHC and SD cards. Also, the EEE PC does not have a 1.3 MP camera. Only a VGA 0.3 MP camera.

    JAmerican,

Some sites (E.g http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/hardware/laptops/soa/ASUS-EeePC-701/0,2000065761,339284540,00.htm ) mention that a MMC/SD/MS card reader is present. I’ll check it.

Regarding EeePC’s webcam, I’ll update the table.

    So…

The $1,000,000 question is “How long before we will see the Everex running MacOS, Win and Linux?”
