Comparison of Asus EeePC, Everex Cloudbook and HP 2133

by atticus ~ March 27, 2008

Engadget has just posted the full specifications for the upcoming HP 2133 UMPC. There are four models of HP 2133 and they differ with one another in processor speed, hard disk drive size, RAM size, Bluetooth availability, battery life and operating system. The price ranges from US$549 to US$749.

I have chosen to compare the basic HP 2133 model with Asus EeePC 4G and Everex Cloudbook CE1200V as it is the lowest in price and runs Linux. Let’s take a look at the specifications.

You probably noticed that some specifications are still missing. I will update them when the information becomes available. Note that I have ignored the UMPC dimensions and weight given by Engadget as they appear to be the shipping box specifications. I used the weight from an earlier report instead.

Compared to Asus EeePC and Everex Cloudbook 1200V, HP 2133 has a larger, scratch resistant 8.9″ screen running at 1280 x 768 resolution. In addition, it has a whopping 120Gb hard disk drive. Are these worth the extra US$150? How about an extra 512Mb of RAM and an express card slot? While I have reservations with the higher priced HP 2133 models, I believe the basic model will attract buyers. I think the concerns would be the battery life, dimensions of the ultra portable and the perfomance of Via C7-M ULV 1.2 GHz with the higher screen load.

What do you think? Would you buy the new UMPC from HP?

I will decide between HP 2133 and awaited Asus EEE 900. But I am leaning more towards EEE, since I would prefer SSD and Windows XP, instead of HDD and Vista. Moreover, Eee 900 may offer touchscreen, and then it’s no brainer for me.

But from the three choices you are presenting, I would buy HP, since 7″ screen is too small for me. So my take is - let’s wait for Eee 900.
