Just when it looks like UMPCs are getting bigger, heavier, faster and more expensive, a Chinese company decided to go the opposite way. Guangzhou Skytone Transmission Technologies, unveiled the minimalist Alpha-400 UMPC at CommunicAsia 2008. According to the staffs, the Skytone Alpha-400 weighs 600 grams, has a battery life of 3.5 hours and is slated to sell not more than USD200. Here’s a list of other hardware specifications taken from its brochure:

  • Display 7″ LCD panel
  • CPU XBurst 400MHz 32bit
  • Operating System Linux 2.4
  • Memory 128MB RAM
  • Storage 1G NAND Flash
  • Card Reader SD Card
  • Interface 1 x RJ45 LAN jack, 2 x USB ports, 1 x Microphone-in jack, 1 x Headphone-out jack
  • Audio Built-in Speaker & Microphone
  • Broadband Access (Optional) WiFi, ADSL, CDMA, GPRS

With Asus EEE available below USD300, it might be a hard sell for the Alpha-400. But at least, its keyboard types better compared to the EEE.
